How to Make Salt Dough Play Food for Your Market Stall

We have had harvest time on our toy farm…

autumn's harvest

Salt Dough is such great material for making any toys with children: it’s cheap and easy to put together.

All you need is:

  • 300 g plain flour
  • 300 g salt
  • 1 tbsp Oil
  • 250 ml water

Make a smooth dough out of the ingredients and form fruit, vegetables, bread, cakes, fish and anything else you want to sell on your farmers market. You can use cloves to make stalks on apples, pears and oranges.

Next bake them at 150° C / gas 2 at least for an hour. It depends on the thickness of your fruit and veg. For us an hour and a half worked well. Just check them sometimes if they are hard and dry.

When they are completely dry and cool you can paint them with non-toxic water colours and finish them off with a layer of lack to make them more durable.

And now…would you like to try some of our homemade breads, pretzels or pastries?

Or some freshly caught fish from the South West Coast of Ireland? Organically grown tomatoes, pumpkins or spuds anyone?
